INSTRA COMPLETES THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT FOR THE CARRUGUEIRO WIND FARM IN ASTURIAS

The construction of a wind farm in an area with complex topography presents challenges that go beyond the installation of the wind turbines themselves. The transport of large components, access routes and the construction of the power transmission infrastructure require planning and technical supervision tailored to the specific characteristics of each site.

In this context, INSTRA has provided project management services for the Carrugueiro Wind Farm and its grid connection infrastructure, situated in the municipalities of Boal and Castropol, in Asturias.

Developed by Parque Eólico Carrugueiro S.L., the wind farm has a total installed capacity of 13.5 MW, comprising three Vestas V136 wind turbines, each with a rated power of 4.5 MW, a hub height of 82 metres and a maximum tip height of 146.3 metres.

The transmission infrastructure includes an 8,367-metre underground medium-voltage circuit, which connects the wind farm to the Viento del Sellía 30/132 kV collector substation.

Engineering and supervision during construction
The scope of the work carried out by INSTRA has included project management, on-site supervision and technical assistance, as well as technical assistance for the review and approval of engineering documentation at the Issued for Construction (IFC) stage.

One of the unique aspects during construction was the transport of the wind turbine blades to the site using a Blade Lifter system, which is particularly suitable for moving large components in areas that are difficult to access.

This technology allows the blade’s orientation to be adjusted during transport, by lifting and tilting it to facilitate passage through tight bends and around other obstacles. Its use also helps to reduce the need for major earthworks, road widening or the construction of temporary tracks, thereby minimising the impact on the surrounding environment.

INSTRA’s involvement in the Carrugueiro Wind Farm builds on the organisation’s experience in developing renewable energy projects, providing technical expertise and support throughout the various stages of implementation.
